The global economic crisis has caused many videogame developers to close up shop – Factor 5, Free Radical, and Pandemic are just a few of the bigger one. Perhaps one of the most tragic shutdowns came last May, though, when the prolific PC developer 3D Realms shut down, perhaps known best as the creators of the Duke Nukem franchise. Though we still have no idea what’s going to happen with Duke Nukem Forever, Duke’s creator George Broussard has recently come out and started answering some questions from the fans. So of course, what was one of the first questions? 360 or PS3. “I prefer the 360 due to Xbox Live and the unified achievement system,”
In the last year or so, we have seen a myriad of sequels released – some of which kept the original games’ composers (Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2) and some of which did not (Modern Warfare 2, Just Cause 2). Naturally, maintaining the same composer often creates a certain sense of familiarity and continuity within the series. Arguably, no game series believes this more than God of War. Back for a third entry into the series, Gerard Marino and his band of Olympus musical brothers have returned to give Kratos the send-off he deserves. Though most agree the game is a worthy ending to Kratos’ murderous, avenging rampage, how well did the music do? More
Another week means another set of new animals, items, and decorations have been added to everyone’s favorite Facebook games. What’s more, new social games are being released all the time! How can one begin to keep up? Our weekly social game summary is a good place to start. New Games New games hit the Facebook platform daily, but very few of them come from well-known, established studios. This week saw two such titles go live. Poker Blitz from Zynga is a more casual, arcade-style take on the ever-popular Texas Hold ‘Em scene. Hotel City from Playfish allows players to run, grow, and decorate their own hotel. FarmVille – Zynga The Big Story this week in

Dragon Age Origins is easily one of my favorite games of the last few years and I think that I love it for exactly the same reason that many other gamers can’t stand it — it’s big, it’s heavy on story, and it’s unashamedly nerdy. So when the chance came to dive back into Ferelden with the Awakening expansion, it was a done deal for me. As long as BioWare didn’t rock the boat too much, I was pretty much guaranteed to enjoy it. I’m happy to say that Awakening delivers more of the same stuff we loved the first time around. It has fun combat, a good story and great sense that your choices
Destructoid: The slick spot, inspired by urban art, features a mixture of in-game animation and handdrawn style animations. The cherry on top is Just Blaze who yells about some stuff (and as he tends to do, says his own name) before telling me to pre-order Super Street Fighter IV now. Which I did almost immediately after the trailer ended, because I’m just really weak-willed.
Aliens Vs. Predator (AvP) made it’s way onto the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I had the opportunity to play through the game on the Xbox 360 and was left with mixed feelings. The nice thing about AvP is instead of one long drawn out story, you get to experience three separate storylines as seen through the eyes of three characters, which definitely helps keep the game fresh. The first thing I noticed about AvP is its difficulty level. As someone who has been playing games for over 20 years, I found the learning curve a bit too much for the average gamer and it took me a couple of hours to get used
Bungie has trotted out even more tantalising details for the Halo: Reach Beta, confirming that Armour Lock definitely wasn’t an April Fool, some lovely visual upgrades will feature and a selection of weapon loadouts will be available at the beginning of each multiplayer round. For instance, the Air Assault loadout gives you an assault rifle, magnum and jetpack to start off with, whereas Operator will give you a shotgun, Expert Marksman starts you with the deadly scoped DMR and Grenadier puts a grenade launcher in your hands from the off. In the same list of updates over on Bungie.net, the differences between the Elites and Spartans are also detailed, and the Elites are much more
Microsoft has tried to catch up with some of the titans of the gaming world, such as Sony with the release of the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 offers many new features that players will love: Free limited subscription to online gaming – This allows players who have not been participating in online gaming a chance to see what is available at no charge. All Xbox 360s come with Live-aware – This means you can get a friend invite or see who is online and what they are playing from your Xbox 360. The button in the middle of the controller makes all this very easy. It offers great media features including listening to music
